Day 4 - December 17, 2007

TODAY WAS THE DAY...WE FINALLY MET MIAN (a.k.a. Jakob)!!!

We started our day very early (5:30 AM) as neither of us could sleep. We got ready, ate breakfast at our favorite little cafe, and went for a walk. We met the driver around 9:30 AM and made our first stop at what we thought was the orphange. It was a really nice red building and he called to say we were a bit early...only to find out that was not the right place (it was a govt. building we will go to tomorrow). We then spent another 45 minutes driving to the real orphange...which from the outside was not as nice. The inside; however, was spotless...very clean, neat, organized, not what we expected (we were pleasantly surprised)! We met with the orphange director and had a chance to ask some questions (this was after starting and stopping about 10 times with interruptions...we've become very patient).

After being there about 30 or so minutes, we were taken into a small room that they use for speech therapy that also had some toys in it. A few mintues later, Mian the munchkin came walking through the door. They said some things to him in Russian and then he waived to us! I quickly pulled out a book that made noise and he was in! He came over and started playing with it immediately. Everyone else saw he was ok and left us there with him to play for the next 90 minutes. We had been told that he might be a bit shy with Wayne as he does not really see men much, but that was not the case. Wayne turned on his charm (ha ha) and Mian was drawn to him immediately. We played with books, crayons, toys, more toys, etc and had a wonderful time with him. He is just such a sweet boy! We can't wait to fatten him up a bit as he is a bit skinny (and I'm dying to get him a decent hair cut). We brought an Old Navy outfit to hold up to him to see how it would fit. The 18-24 month old clothes seem to be about right...maybe even a little big for him at this point (especially his short little legs...think he'll be taking more after Wayne than me in that area). His Russian outfit said 24 months and fit about right...also maybe a little big.

We were even able to use some Russian with him (he pointed to Rosco and Bailey when we asked him in Russian where the dog was, so that was good). He is definitely a boy....loves building and stacking things, was not really into the stuffed bear we had for him...and when he heard a truck outside, he wanted to look out and see it, so Wayne had to lift him up so they could watch the truck go by. Wayne and I both felt he was very quick to catch on to things...he mimicked everything we did, followed our direction if we showed him how to do something and was also very polite in letting us know when he was ready to move on to the next thing! When he was sitting on Wayne's lap, I said to him "good-YEH Papa" (where is Papa) and he pointed to Wayne and said "Papa!" Not sure how he knew that or if he has just seen that in books, but I was impressed. Of course, Mama did not work out but hey, we've got time. Wayne says we have to work on Daddy next as he does not really want to be called Papa...I told him that maybe when we start to call Mian Jakob he can work on that as well :)

I've included some videos and photos from today. We expect to get in 2 visits tomorrow, so hopefully that will be the case.

After the orphange, we just had the driver take us to Gorky Park where we had lunch and watched ice skating before heading back over to Arbat Street. Sitting in the hotel is pretty boring, so we are trying to get out as much as possible despite the cold and snow.

Thanks to everyone who has sent comments through...we've read them all and love getting them!

Make sure you click the play button on the 2 pictures below as they are videos (adding this comment in as some folks have been missing it).

We'll post more photos tomorrow!
Love, Courtney, Wayne and Mian (Jakob)

Courtney & wayne -
I actually started crying when I saw the pictures of you with Jakob. He is just too cute and I'm so glad he was receptive to you both. That is so wonderful. But you and Wayne both have a way with children, so I wasn't surprised he took to you. I know you already loved him before you met him and I'm sure he sensed that. Seeing all of you together really makes it feel as though he is already part of our family and we welcome him with open arms. I can't wait to meet him!!
Again, please give him a hug and kiss from Nana.
Love you both, Mom/Pam

It's me again - I didn't realize the last two photos were videos until I re-read your comments. After watching the videos, I love Jakob even more - he just has such a sweet disposition. You finally have your son and I know you will be such wonderful parents.
Love, Mom/Pam

Dearest Courtney and Wayne,
The Haydon-Wilson Family will be momentarily forgoing the usual Hallmark Card language, stating our sentiments in a more accurate manner: THIS NEWS ROCKS!!!
And it rocks to the extent that we're basically unable to get on with our day until we figure out an effective way to convey, via this blog, how happy the three of us are for the three of you! The photos and videos make the obvious perfectly clear: You're meant to be a family...'nuff said. And because Jakob's Mama's voice sounds EXACTLY like his Aunt Christi's voice, at least during the video footage of him playing with "Papa," perhaps he'll feel
especially comfortable when finally meeting us face-to-face someday. Jakob may have a tiny physique, but anyone can see his heart is huge. To call him Family is our privilege indeed. We are so proud of you both, Courtney and Wayne, for making the choice to give this precious boy an amazing future, and a family to call his own!
All Our Love and Prayers,
Christi, Larry, and Autry Girl

Courtney @ Wayne

Christi and I just read the latest blog entry together and watched the videos.

What a great little boy! And you guys were great with him! All's going to be well.

I just read the 1st pages of the blog yesterday -- Sunday. That night I watched a classic Russian film called EARTH, thinking about Jakob along the way.

(Don't rush out and rent EARTH. It's a 1930 silent film set on a communal farm. Brilliant but for film geeks only!)

It did make me think that Jakob is going to have some of that deep poetic artistic Russian soul in his DNA, and that's a good thing.

Courtney & Wayne - Wow...what a fantastic experience I just had reading (and looking at) this entry! I am definitely especially thankful for the internet today, and I think I speak for all of us when I thank you again for putting in the time and effort to allow us the privilege of witnessing this amazing experience as close to "first-hand" as possible, considering we are currently on opposite sides of the world. Seeing you in photos WITH Jakob...I don't know when I have seen either of you look happier, and it thrills me to no end! On top of that, seeing my dear sister Courtney getting to hug and cuddle Jakob in the second video made me happier than almost anything I've ever seen! I have already set the photo of Jakob & Courtney as our desktop background (no offense, Wayne, but no photo of all 3 of you together yet - maybe I'll have to switch photos each day), and I can't wait to show off these new photos of my favorite nephew to basically everyone I meet! I could go on and on about how wonderful this day was, but I know you know how I feel, so I'll stop for today. Ed, Ben, and I love you, and we cannot wait to see what happens next!

I haven't had a good cry like that in ages!!! What a great feeling. We are so overjoyed. Again, I can't imagine how you are both feeling. We are bursting with happiness. And Jonas didn't want to get away from the computer screen. He didn't even want to come and take the dog outside for a walk!! He was yelling at me to play it again and again.

Martin here; Hey guys, what a lovely kid, you look fantastic together, can't wait to meet Jakob. Cheers M.

Courtney & Wayne,
I have read what you posted today about meeting Jakob at least 10 times, maybe more, and watched the videos at least that many times. It makes me feel closer to all of you, and I know the next time you go to Russia, Jakob will have changed and I want to remember how he was when you first met him because there was such joy in all your faces. I never dreamed that seeing you with Jakob would be so emotional, as I'm sure it was for you. I can't wait for more postings!
Love you, Mom/Pam

Okay, I either have to stop reading through this or leave work. I am sure that my co-workers believe I have had a most traumatic experience when, in fact, this is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing your first meeting with Jakob - he is beautiful and the three of you look like you belong together. We love you, Aunt Penny & Uncle Jeffery
